M.Tech in Computational TechniquesTHE COURSE DETAILS |
This programme is being offered by School of Physics (University of Hyderabad) with the participation of the Department of Computer/Information Science of the University.
This course was started looking at the increasing need for the people trained in the Computational Science with a background in Physics or related sciences. The basic structure of the course was designed after consulting with many Research and Development (R & D) Organizations. The student after completing the M.Tech(CT) course is expected to be well equipped with different computational techniques applicable in different areas of Physics, Computer Science and other related sciences. M.Tech (Computational Techniques) is a Post-MSc course. This is a 3-semester course with last semester wholly dedicated for Project-work. The pre-requisite for this course is MSc in Physics or in related areas. The students are selected through a nationwide entrance test followed by an interview. Currently, the School offers 8 seats for this course. Though it is not essential, GATE score or/and CSIR/UGC (NET) qualification can be an added advantage. With CSIR/UGC JRF qualification, one can directly appear for the interview skipping the written test. This is a flexible course and the course material is subject to frequent revival according to the needs and the development in the field. The student of this course takes classes with other students coming from different backgrounds like Mathematics, Statistics, Electronics & Computer Science. Throughout the 3-semesters the students interact with other students doing their MSc, MPhil, MTech(CS & AI) and MCA. This exposure is expected to benefit the students of M.Tech(CT) to develop themselves as multi faceted professionals. The course was started in 1999. In the same year, a course of similar nature called MTech(Computational Sciences) was started in Indian Institute of Sciences (IISc), Bangalore. This coincidence of two premier educational institutes coming up with courses of similar nature indicates the right timing & acute necessity of such a course. Four out of six students of the first batch(1999-2000) of M.Tech(CT) have been placed. Two of them in Mahindra British Telecom (MBT, Pune) & one each in MegaSoft India Ltd. and SQL-Star India Ltd. The diverse nature of the fields of these companies says a lot about the diverse areas in which the students of this course can fit into. The pure science background of the student with added knowledge of the technological aspects of computation enables these students to be versatile.
Following is the brief introduction to the 3-semester structure of the course. We request you to kindly go through this short introduction. And in case you would like to see, the Detailed Syllabus is here.
In this semester out of total five subjects one is a core course. And two electives each from School of Physics and Department of Computer Science are offered. Following is the list of those subjects with short introduction.
In the third semester the student is supposed to take up a project. The project work may be carried out in School of Physics, Department of Computer/Information Sciences, or other recognized Research & Development (R & D) centers. The first batch of the students (1999-2000) did their projects in Department of Computer Science, School of Physics and in National Remote Sensing Agency. The School has Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Electronics Corporation of India Ltd (ECIL). Talks are on for MoU with Mahindra British Telecom (MBT) and the MoU is expected to get materialized soon. The student can do his/her project in any reputed institution/orgnization or a company. |
